Seborrheic Dermatitis (Dandruff)

Seborrheic dermatitis, commonly known as dandruff, is a chronic, inflammatory, and fairly common skin condition that causes white to yellowish scales to form on oily areas of the body. These areas typically include the scalp, eyebrows, around the nose, and inside the ears.

Symptoms:

  • Scaling (white to yellowish flakes or scales)
  • Redness
  • Itching (pruritus)
  • Burning sensation
  • Oily skin
  • Crusting (in severe cases)

Affected Areas:

  • Scalp
  • Eyebrows
  • Around the nose (nasolabial folds)
  • Inside the ears
  • Eyelids
  • Chest (especially the upper chest)
  • Back (especially the upper back)

Causes and Contributing Factors:

  • Malassezia globosa (a type of yeast that naturally lives on the skin)
  • Overproduction of sebum (oil)
  • Immune system response
  • Stress
  • Hormonal changes
  • Cold and dry weather
  • Certain medical conditions (e.g., Parkinson's disease, HIV)
  • Certain medications

Treatment and Management:

  • Medicated Shampoos: Containing antifungals (e.g., ketoconazole, ciclopirox), coal tar, selenium sulfide, or zinc pyrithione.
  • Topical Creams and Ointments: Antifungal creams, corticosteroids (for short-term use), or calcineurin inhibitors.
  • Over-the-counter Treatments: Gentle cleansing and moisturizing.
  • Lifestyle Changes: Managing stress, eating a healthy diet, and avoiding harsh hair and skin products.

Important Considerations:

  • Seborrheic dermatitis is not contagious.
  • It is a chronic condition, meaning it can come and go.
  • A dermatologist can provide a diagnosis and recommend the most appropriate treatment plan.
