Cherry Angiomas and Spider Angiomas
Cherry angiomas and spider angiomas are small, benign vascular lesions that can appear anywhere on the body and are generally not a cause for concern. While they are typically asymptomatic, some individuals may experience occasional itching, especially if the lesions become irritated.
Cherry Angiomas (Campbell de Morgan Spots):
- Appearance: Small, bright red to purple, dome-shaped papules.
- Size: Typically range from a pinpoint to several millimeters in diameter.
- Cause: Thought to be related to the proliferation of capillaries (tiny blood vessels). The exact cause is unknown, but they are more common with age.
- Location: Can appear anywhere on the body, but are frequently found on the torso, arms, and legs.
Spider Angiomas (Nevus Araneus):
- Appearance: Characterized by a central, red papule (the "body" of the spider) with radiating capillaries resembling spider legs.
- Size: Vary in size, from a few millimeters to a centimeter or more.
- Cause: Related to dilated capillaries, often associated with hormonal changes, sun exposure, or liver disease (though most are not related to underlying health issues).
- Location: Most commonly found on the face, neck, and chest.
Treatment Options (for both Cherry and Spider Angiomas):
- Electrocautery (Electrosurgery): Uses an electric current to destroy the lesion.
- Laser Therapy: Different types of lasers (e.g., pulsed dye laser, Nd:YAG laser) can effectively target and eliminate the blood vessels.
- Cryotherapy (Freezing): Liquid nitrogen is used to freeze and destroy the lesion.
Important Considerations:
- Both cherry and spider angiomas are benign and do not pose a health risk. Removal is typically for cosmetic purposes.
- Treatment is usually performed in-office and is relatively quick and simple.
- As these are considered cosmetic procedures, they are generally not covered by medical insurance.
- It's important to consult with a dermatologist to confirm the diagnosis and discuss the best treatment option for your specific case.
- While treatment is effective, new lesions may develop over time.
