Candin (Candidin) for Verruca Vulgaris

Candin (often referred to as Candidin) is a medication used as immunotherapy for patients with numerous verruca vulgaris (common warts) lesions and/or those who cannot undergo destructive methods like cryotherapy (freezing) or burning for various reasons.

How Candin Works (Immunotherapy for Warts):

Candin contains antigens derived from Candida albicans, a common yeast. When injected intradermally (into the skin), it triggers an immune response in the body. This response helps the body recognize and fight the wart virus (human papillomavirus or HPV), leading to the resolution of the warts.

Side Effects of Candin:

  • Local Reactions: Pain, redness, swelling, itching, and a burning sensation at the injection site are common. These are usually mild and resolve on their own.
  • Flu-like Symptoms: Some patients may experience transient flu-like symptoms such as muscle aches, fatigue, headache, or mild fever. These symptoms are usually temporary and subside within a few days.
  • Systemic Reactions (Less Common): Fever and generalized malaise (feeling unwell) can occur, although these are less frequent.
  • Rare Reactions: In rare cases, more severe allergic reactions are possible. It is important to seek immediate medical attention if you experience difficulty breathing, hives, or severe swelling.

Important Considerations Regarding Candin Treatment:

  • Candin is typically used when other treatments for warts, such as topical medications (salicylic acid, imiquimod), cryotherapy, or curettage, have not been successful or are not suitable.
  • It's important to discuss the potential benefits and risks of Candin with a healthcare professional.
  • The number of injections and the treatment schedule will be determined by the healthcare provider.
  • While Candin can be effective, it is not guaranteed to work for everyone.
  • Candin is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women, or individuals with certain autoimmune conditions.

Other Treatment Options for Verruca Vulgaris:

  • Topical Treatments: Salicylic acid, imiquimod, cantharidin.
  • Destructive Methods: Cryotherapy (freezing), electrocautery (burning), curettage (surgical removal).
  • Laser Therapy: Different types of lasers can be used to destroy wart tissue.
